What your therapist said about the 40s being about congruence — Carl Rogers calling it the alignment between inner values and how you actually show up — that framing does something different than the usual "know yourself" instruction. It names the gap without making it shameful.

The part about the layoff cracking something open: I've heard versions of that story many times, usually from people who were surprised by the relief underneath the fear. The attachment to the job title had been doing more structural work than they realized.

I think what people don't realise is that how jobs and work have identified themselves more than the pay itself. Ironically, they might feel relieved for a bit but soon realise they need the financial sustenance again and hence the cycle repeats.
